What follows is the most inspired section of the entire Magicians series as Grossman adds an Ocean’s 11 -style caper to his genre-bending resume. What does a former Magician King do in his late 20s? Well, it makes sense that the final chapter in Grossman’s trilogy, The Magicians Land starts at the end of the world - a strip mall in New Jersey. (Grossman is the book critic for Time and would be very aware of the commercial opportunities for his novels a TV series seems perpetually in the works.) After a stunning conclusion, Quentin is left facing the most terrifying invention of the 21st century - the quarter-life crisis. The superior sequel, 2011’s The Magician King, crossed into even darker territory than you would have thought possible for a series so clearly aimed at being the Next Big Thing. ![]() Not all of them make it out of The Magicians alive and none make it out whole (in one case, quite literally). They remind me of everyone I went to school with. They might as well be the cast of Girls - most of them spoiled, over-inebriated, over-medicated, over-sexed and overly self-absorbed. While Quentin can be a real drag to be around, his friends are even worse. It’s central “hero” is Quentin Coldwater, a Brooklyn high school graduate as smart as he is depressed, who discovers that learning magic is often more boring than thrilling after he enrolls at Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia (the characters are often transported to a magical land called Fillory) but had one foot firmly planted in literary fiction, grounded by the dark depths of its characters complex interiors lives. Rowling’s mega-selling series (kids study at a secret school for magic) and C.S. Described, not entirely unfairly, as Harry Potter for adults, The Magicians not only shared many characteristics with J.K.
